Information We Collect

  • Information you give us

We may ask you to provide certain personal information (for example, name, email address, and school or school district if you are an educator) in order to access our full set of resources, provide feedback on our resources, or use certain other features of our site. You can always decline to supply personal information; however, doing so may prevent you from accessing certain resources or engaging in certain activities on the site.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 18. This website is not directed to children, and we intend that the people providing personal information to us will be educators and other adults only. Children should always get permission from a parent or legal guardian before sending any information about themselves (such as their names or email addresses) to anyone over the Internet.

  • Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies to recognize return visitors, recognize registered users, analyze trends, administer the site, track users’ movements around the site, and gather usage, traffic pattern, and location information about our user base as a whole. Google Analytics, a tool we use, plants a cookie on your web browser to identify you as a unique user, but this cookie cannot be used by anyone other than Google. You can control the use of cookies at the individual browser level; please refer to your browser settings for additional information on disabling cookies, which will prevent our site and Google Analytics from recognizing your return visits to this site.

  • Web server logs

As is true of most websites, we gather certain information automatically through your use of the site. If you are a registered user, this information may be associated with your individual login identity. Information gathered automatically may include Internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet service provider (ISP), referring or exit pages, the files viewed on the site (for example, HTML pages, graphics, etc.), operating system, date/time stamp, and clickstream data to analyze trends in the aggregate and administer the site.

We use analytical software, including Google Analytics, to help us gather and understand this information. This software may send information to its parent company or licensor. However, information sent to such third parties will not include personal information you have provided to us such as your name or email address. Google’s ability to use or share information collected by Google Analytics is restricted by the Google Analytics Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy. Google has also developed an opt-out tool for Google Analytics.

How We Use Personal Information

We will use your personal information only for purposes related to the dissemination and improvement of education resources regarding copyright and digital citizenship, or as required by applicable law. For example, we may use personal information to improve the operation of our site and our resources; to inform users about updates, corrections, or additions to our resources or related resources regarding digital citizenship; to reach out for input or feedback from users; and to compile aggregate information about usage of our resources for administrative purposes. We will not use your personal information for any purpose unrelated to copyright and digital citizenship education, unless required by law.

Disclosure to Third Parties

We will not disclose your personal information to third parties except as follows:

  1. when we believe disclosure is reasonably required to comply with a valid law or legal request, or to protect our rights or the rights or safety of others;
  2. to third parties who help us provide any part of our site or our resources, to the limited extent required for such help, and on condition that they may not further disclose your data or use it for any other purpose;
  3. to parties engaged in copyright or digital citizenship education, on the condition that they may use or disclose the information only for purposes directly related to improving or disseminating copyright and digital citizenship education resources; or
  4. as part of a transfer or sale of our assets or a merger of our parent organization. In the event of such a transaction, your personal data will likely be part of the assets transferred. We will notify you if this happens if we have a means to contact you and we are required to provide you with notice.

Information Security

We store the information we collect using a database system hosted by WP Engine, a commercial web hosting company. As set forth in its Terms of Service, WP Engine has contractually committed to maintain commercially reasonable technical and operational measures designed to protect its networks from malicious activity and protect the security of the data it hosts. We cannot guarantee, however, that there will never be a security breach or similar event resulting in a disclosure of personal information in a manner inconsistent with this Privacy Policy.

You may also use this email address to request that we delete or change your personally identifiable information or to instruct us not to contact you.

Do Not Track Disclosure

This website does not currently respond to “Do Not Track” signals sent from web browsers.

Users Outside of the United States

This website is intended for users in the United States. If you use this website from outside the United States, then by providing any information to us over the website or through another direct communication with us, you understand and consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information as described in this Privacy Policy. You also consent to the transfer of your information to the United States. The United States may not offer the same level of data protection as the country in which you reside.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We reserve the right to change this Privacy Policy. When we do so, we will make a copy of the updated policy available to you by posting it at this URL, or through other methods. If we make changes that are material, we will highlight them at the location where we post the updated policy and may also notify you by other reasonable methods that we select. If we make material changes that will result in a new use or disclosure of your personal information that we previously collected and stored, we will obtain any consent that may be required by law.

Effective Date

The Privacy Policy is effective as of November 1, 2018.
